West Midlands Lupus Group Open Meeting, Sunday 20th October 2002 Around 120 Group members and friends crammed into Warley Baptist Church Hall to hear Dr. Caroline Gordon speak about “New Therapies in SLE & the Progress of Long-Term Patients”. Dr. Gordon’s Talk was most informative and helpful. One lady was heard to say, “I have learned more today than in the 35 years since I was first diagnosed.” Stephanie Heaton, LUPUS UK Specialist Nurse (currently on study leave) gave a short overview of her work at Queen Elizabeth/City Hospitals and left quite a number of people surprised at the different aspects that, as dedicated Lupus Nurse, she is expected to cover. Following the Talks by Dr. Gordon and Stephanie, Yvonne Norton, Chairman, made a number of presentations: Dr. Gordon was given a LUPUS UK document case as a thank you for giving up her Sunday to speak to the Meeting. Stephanie was presented with a framed Certificate of Appreciation for her work on behalf of Lupus patients along with a LUPUS UK document case. Andrew Hipkiss was presented with a framed Certificate of Appreciation for all the work (and time!) he has put into setting up the WMLG website. Andrew also received a limited edition LUPUS UK model trolley bus. The Christine Seivewright Memorial Trophy was presented to Margaret Windmill. This award is made to a member whom the Committee feels has coped with the problems caused by Lupus in a way to be admired. Margaret received a large gleaming trophy (polished by Carol Osgerby, winner 2001) which she will hold for 1 year and a small trophy which she will keep. Margaret was very surprised to have been chosen as this year’s recipient of the award! The sales table did a roaring trade, particularly with Christmas cards, and, combined with the proceeds of the day’s Raffle and Bring & Buy stall, the sum of £350 was raised. This money will be used to help fund ongoing research/patient care in the area covered by WMLG. |
